With a love for Sci-Fi and all things animated, she uses her multifaceted perspective to craft stories with imaginative visuals, rich world building, and emotionally connective moments. Using writing as a way to understand her place within the world, her work often explores themes of mental health, rebellion, coming of age, and assessing one’s place within oppressive systems. Joan’s work spans different genres and demographics, from kids animation, to family drama.
Joan’s background in producing commercials developed her knack for sourcing, leading, and collaborating with the best creative partners. It is this wealth of experience that leads her to be an effective crafter of story from script to screen. She revels in formulating partnerships that synergize art with social change. One such partnership she fostered was between United Way and the Pantone Color Institute to produce the special colour Unignorable used to highlight social issues in attention-grabbing artistic works, including the most visited exhibit in Nuit Blanche history, The Ignored Room.
Joan extends her mission to create social change by working with BIPOC TV & Film, a non-profit dedicated to racial equity for creatives who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour. She’s been involved with BIPOC TV & Film since 2018. In 2020 she spearheaded programming, workshops and initiatives during the pandemic as Events Architect. From late 2020 till early 2022 Joan was Vice-Chair.
When she isn’t writing or volunteering, you can usually find her watching anime, traveling, or rediscovering the beauty of the world through the eyes of her daughter.
Joan is currently available for hire as a Story Editor or writer for both kids and drama series, and is currently a member of the WGC.
If you’re interested in working with her, you can contact her to request her samples and CV.
